Shimmer Glaze and Sparkling Gel- Pentart 101- Episode 22

How to use Pentart Sparkling gel and shimmer glaze

Pentart Shimmer glaze and Sparkling gel are two products that can help you achieve a beautiful shiny effect and add interest to your project. Let's look at both and figure out which one is right for you!

Shimmer Glaze:

A subtle shimmering glaze that has a gel consistency. It’s easy to spread and apply on both light and dark surfaces.

Wipe it back when wet to create a less intensive effect or apply in several layers to enhance the shine. It has a wax content and is water repellent which protects the surface.

It is available in metallic and pearl white colors and pairs perfectly with Dekor Chalky paint.

Colors:

  • Pearl White

  • Silver

  • Gold

Fun Fact: Shimmer Glaze works great on top of decoupage, and it also enhances your painted background.

When using on decoupage, its best not to start on the focal point as it will go on more heavily. Rather, work on a non – focal point and work yourself up to the rest of the piece. Shimmer Glaze is not perfectly transparent, but it does have a little of opacity.

Shimmer Glaze was designed to use on furniture, best paired with Dekor Chalky paint. But Shimmer Glaze works great with mixed media crafts.

Think of the Shimmer Glazes as the sparkle version of Antiquing Gels. They are the same consistency and are used the same way.

Shimmer Glaze is a finishing product.

Sparkling Gel:

Transparent color-based gel with gold or silver sparkling pigments. Layer the colors for an iridescent effect. It is available in several colors.

Colors:

  • Thorn Gold

  • Brown Gold

  • Red Gold

  • Green Gold

  • Olive Gold

  • Blue Silver

  • Transparent Gold

  • Transparent Silver

Sparkling Gels and Shimmer Glaze are very similar. The Sparkling Gel has a bit of a higher mica content.

Tip: Transparent Gold is very similar to Shimmer Glaze. Shimmer Glaze looks muted while Transparent Gold has more of a glitter flake and doesn’t cover up the image as much. Both products can be used interchangeably.

Sparkling Gels can be layered, and could be wiped back on pieces. However, when using the wipe back method, mist water onto the piece before using the Sparkling Gel because it will be easier to wipe back.

Tip: Sparkling Gel works best if the background color is similar to the Sparkling Gel color.
