The thickness will determine the depth and networks of the cracks.
Component 2 can be applied through a stencil using a palette knife, creating an interesting cracked pattern. It’s perfect to use on glass, also by adding Transparent Pigment, Pigment paste, Pigment Dyes, and Pigment Powders to component 2 to create attractive colored cracks.
Component 1: Is applied with a clean dry brush. Component 1 is a universal product among the Pentart crackling systems. It’s best to allow component 1 to dry naturally before continuing with component 2.
Component 2: Comes in a thick gel form. It’s white in the jar but it does dry transparent. You’d apply it as a paste with a palette knife in a thin even layer. The thicker it’s applied, the thicker the cracks will be, and vice versa.
To show off cracks more, you can use Antiquing Gels.
As it will create large cracks, it’s not so stable unlike the Fineline or the Classic Crackle. If you use Antique Paste or Wax Paste and start to rub it into the cracks, you risk scratching off the Transparent Crackling Gel. Therefore, using Antiquing Gels is perfect as they are looser and watery. It needs to be sealed because the crack pieces are not connected to anything. They’re just hanging onto the surface, and so by sealing it, those crack pieces will stay intact.
Component 2 is really fun because you have the chance to create your very own metallic crackle paste by mixing component 2 with Metal Pigment Powder, Mica Powders or Pigment Powders.
A couple of key notes
When mixing the powders into the component 2, keep in mind that the gel will dry transparent. The color will shift when mixing, and you’re not going to be able to tell what color it’s going to dry as while you’re mixing it. Because the gel is milky white and dries transparent, you’ll get a more vivid color than what is showing in your mixture. Make sure you have enough contrast underneath your project before applying the Transparent Crackling Gel color mixture. Also, remember that metallics generally show up better against a darker surface.
Key Tip: You can add color to any component 2 crackle, but it’s most effective with Transparent Crackling Gel. Using Transparent Pigment over the Transparent Crackling Gel’s surface would be a fun idea. It would be like a casting while keeping the transparence intact.
